Time: 07:00 pm

African American history in the civil rights movement and in Hawaii is the focus of a free, public program on Wednesday, March 17, at UH Maui College Ka Lama 103. “Mighty Times - the Legacy of Rosa Parks,” a 40-minute film by the Teaching Tolerance Project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, will start at 7:00pm.

Following the film, Ayin Adams, Ph.D., will read from and discuss her new book, African Americans in Hawai'i: A Search for Identity, which will be available for sale and signing by the author. The essays and interviews in the book document the difficulties and challenges as well as the contributions and successes of African Americans in Hawai‘i and give, according to Adams, “fresh new images of, and respect for, blacks in Hawai`i, including their 19th century migrations, leadership roles, successes and contributions to the whaling industry, medicine, business, education, science, civil service, the arts, social work, the military, and politics.”

Co-presenter Adesina Ogunelese will speak about her experiences with one of the elders featured in the book as well as add to the histories. Ogunelese has given a lecture series this spring in public libraries on “Afrikan American Contributions to Hawaii.”

The film “Mighty Times” includes historical news footage featuring iconic civil rights era figures such as Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King, and E. D. Nixon, along with dramatic re-enactments of the 381-day Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott that stimulated the Civil Rights Movement. Another historic speaker in the film is Rev. Robert Graetz who, along with his wife Jeannie, participated in and spoke at Maui’s 2010 Martin Luther King Day march and rally. Graetz is the author of Montgomery - A White Preacher's Memoir. The film has been used in middle school through college level to engage students in the drama of the social movement that ended laws segregating the races in America.

The sponsors of the event are the UH Maui College Peace Club and Maui Peace Action. For more information, call 984-3305 or see website below.
